I had to look up a bit about this but it’s what I thought. The smell is a defense mechanism! It is a deterrent for predators who are put off by the foul smell!

Humans are particularly sensitive to the smell, which is why the tiny creature can produce a smell so incredibly potent. The smell is so potent that if the creature is crushed accidentally when harvesting plants that it lives on or near. The chemicals left can actually be so heavy that the food stuffs will be unusable!
