• Question: What is your favourite volcano to research and why?

      So most volcanologists I know have a soft spot for their PhD degree volcano-during a PhD you spend 3-4 years working on just one project, so you get to know it inside and out! My PhD volcano is Tenerife, and I am very fond of it. It’s a beautiful place with incredible geological scenery, and so much variety. The first picture is the view of Mt Teide from my field area, and the second is the view of my field area (basically a huge cliff wall!) from the direction of Mt Teide.


      But- I am particularly fond of Santorini, which I researched during my MPhil. It is an amazing place, with a pretty awesome archaeological story (the Minoan people are believed to have been wiped out in the years following the massive Minoan eruption of Santorini, and evidence of this is found in archaeological sites on Santorini and neighbouring Crete). As well as this, it is one of the most beautiful volcanic islands I have ever seen- the islands of Santorini form a sunken caldera below the sea, and have been connected to the legend of Atlantis!
