I think the first thing I would do is make sure that my family had enough money to be ok and help out my friends to make sure their lives were stable.
I would buy a house and then I would probably save it, continue to go to work but spend a bit on holidays and nice things that I like – food, drink, maybe some games…
First of all, I’d give some to my family. Make sure they were sorted. I’d buy an old VW campervan to go exploring with my kids on our holidays, and maybe a little cottage by the seaside somewhere. Then, I’d fund my husband’s scientific research so he never had to worry about applying for funding again- he works at a university, and often you can only get small pots of money at a time and it can be quite a difficult way to work. Finally I’d find a way to invest some money in a fund aimed at encouraging students from poor backgrounds into science- perhaps every year students could apply for it and they could use it to do an awesome science project. I came from a poor part of Cornwall, and it was hard for kids at my school to really achieve. I think it’s really important that everyone has an equal opportunity in life to do well and get a great job!
