The best thing about my job is that I get to work with some really smart, innovative scientists who share a common goal – to develop life changing medicines for patients who need them the most. We do cutting edge research to find cures to some really tough to treat diseases like cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. It is a really tough challenge but that is what makes the job even more exciting.

The best thing about being a geologist is that I can look at the world around me, whether I’m on a beach, or in a valley, or on a mountain or a desert, and have the tools to understand how the rocks formed, and how that landscape has evolved through time. It makes exploring new places incredibly exciting, and adds a whole other dimension to my travels 🙂

It’s one of the classic questions and I am going to start with the cliché answer. I get to come into work every day and do a job I love with people I love and get paid to be on the cutting edge of scientific research. This is a great thing.

There are other highlights! Every day I get to come in and work with this:

It’s a massive electron microsope. I study the very small things in nature but unfortunately you need highly specialised equipment. The whole system has to be air tight and all the air pumped out. Inside the system is the same level of vacuum that you might see in space (if we’re having a good day!) Also the whole thing is cooled by liquid nitrogen that is stored in the tower you see… That means I get to use this really interesting stuff all the time!

Once you get the conditions right, and with a bit of luck, you can use very fine tips made of metal to image molecules and atoms and see how they behave… and that’s just cool!
