I became a scientist by doing a degree in Earth Science- during my A level in geography I started to get really interested in volcanoes, so my teacher suggested I look into Earth Science courses. I had never felt particularly scientific in the past, but suddenly it all clicked, and I realised I had been looking at the world all my life like a scientist- I was always intrigued by why things were there, how they formed, so I felt I had found something that really fitted me well.

You get to make a firm decision on choice of subject and college by the end of year 8 equivalent in Ghana and i chose 3 sciences and Maths for A’levels. I was also fascinated about the documentary on CNN on NASA in 1994. And i have been reflecting recently whiles taking part in I’m a scientist on an inter colleges science quiz called ‘Brilliant Maths and Science Quiz ‘ which was moderated by a female maths professor, Prof Ewurama Addy and how she and the college reps inspired me as well. I made time every saturday morning to watch this until i went to college. I guess the above and many more contributed including the one off conversations.
I have never been nerdy or boring as were some of the myths when i stepped into a physics class of 80 with 7 ladies 18 years ago but i went ahead to be myself who had a positive attitude towards learning, still loved fashion, enjoyed human to human interaction and pursued physics demystifying some of the myths.
So its not surprising that i have ended up in a science role which involves a lot of human to human interaction and exerting influence within healthcare.
